Culture

The Foundation dedicates approximately 4% of its annual funding to cultural organizations in the region (allocation will vary slightly year to year, as we respond to each year’s requests). Preference will be given to those organizations whose programs serve a disadvantaged or underserved population.

Sample recipients for 2010:

Art-Reach, Inc., located in Philadelphia, facilitates attendance by underserved audiences at hundreds of cultural events that are offered by over 150 partnering arts organizations across the region, enabling those they serve to experience theatre and visit museums, gardens and historical sites. Funding supports their core programs, including the In-Facility Program which gives member agencies and schools the opportunity to have arts events tailored to their needs; workshops and residencies, bringing performing artists into facilities serving disabled and disadvantaged audiences; information and advocacy.

Community Arts Center, located in Wallingford, has a long history of collaboration, community service and outreach to the underserved, offering countless opportunities to create and explore the arts. Funding will support the Access to Art project, which will allow them to offer “ART to Go,” an outreach program allowing children and adults in some of southeast Pennsylvania’s least-served communities access to art, and many more free activities to the public, including enrichment to older adults, after-school programs, and extension of the Chester Community Mural Program.

Norristown Zoological Society owns and operates the Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown. Their mission is to foster an appreciation of wildlife and its habitat that will promote active participation in conservation. Funding will support general operating costs, including care and conservation of their animal collection, education programs, facilities maintenance, staffing costs and general administration.

Woodmere Art Museum, , located in Philadelphia, has celebrated the art and artists of the Philadelphia region since 1940, with acclaimed exhibitions. Outreach to disadvantaged children has been a priority for 23 years. Funding will support “The Way I See It” program for disadvantaged children, ages 8-9, attending underserved city public schools. The program addresses the troubling issue of literacy by combining reading and writing with art-making projects.
