Children’s Literacy Initiative,
located in Philadelphia, was founded in 1988 to enhance the opportunity for low-income children to enter school ready to learn, and, once in school, to be successful in learning to read. They were funded to help provide professional development services and training materials to three kindergarten teachers in the J.K. Gotwals Elementary School in Norristown, enhancing their instructional skills and increasing student reading achievement levels.

Embracing the Child,
located in Glenside, PA, provides disadvantaged and at-risk children and youth with books that empower them with the tools of literacy. They supply like-minded nonprofits with potently thought-provoking books and interpretive materials for non-traditional learning programs serving the most vulnerable kids. They were funded for general operating support, specifically library development administered at youth clubs, after-school and summer camp programs or alternative-education facilities, including four county youth detention centers.

Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic – Philadelphia Unit,
with offices in King of Prussia, PA, provides textbooks in recorded format to all those who cannot effectively read standard print due to a visual impairment, dyslexia or other physical disabilities. They were funded to support the production and distribution of recorded textbooks among the print impaired students of this region through the Educational Outreach Program, offering them the opportunity to improve reading levels and cultivate positive attitudes towards learning.
